This calculator covers standard each way returns, Rule 4 deductions, and basic dead heat settlement. It does not cover void bets, best odds guaranteed, extra place promotions, or bookmaker-specific concessions.
How to Use the Each Way Bet Calculator
The Each Way Bet Calculator works out the return from a horse racing each way bet. Enter your stake, odds, place terms, finishing position, and any Rule 4 or dead heat details.
The calculator then shows the win return, place return, total return, and profit or loss.
Step 1: Choose Your Stake Type
Select whether your stake is shown as a stake each way or a total stake.
If you enter £10 each way, your total stake is £20. That means £10 on the win part and £10 on the place part.
If you enter £20 as a total stake, the calculator splits it into £10 win and £10 place.
Step 2: Enter the Odds
Add the odds for your selection.
You can use fractional odds like 5/1 or decimal odds like 6.00. The Each Way Betting Calculator uses these odds for the win part of the bet, then applies the place terms to the place part.
Step 3: Add the Place Terms
Choose the place fraction offered by the bookmaker.
Most each way horse racing bets use terms such as:
- 1/4 odds
- 1/5 odds
For example, if your horse is priced at 10/1 and the place terms are 1/5 odds, the place part pays at 2/1.
Step 4: Add the Number of Places Paid
Enter how many places the bookmaker is paying.
This matters because a horse finishing fourth might be a winning place bet in one race, but a loser in another. Always check the race terms before placing the bet.
Step 5: Enter the Finishing Position
Add where your selection finished.
A winner pays both parts of the bet. A placed horse only pays the place part. If the horse finishes outside the paid places, both parts lose.
Step 6: Add Rule 4 or Dead Heat Details If Needed
Use the Rule 4 box if a deduction applies after a non-runner.
For example, a 20p Rule 4 deduction means 20p in every £1 of winnings is deducted. The calculator applies this to winnings only, not the returned stake.
Use the dead heat option if your selection shared a winning or placed position with other runners. Dead heat settlements can reduce the return because the stake is split between the tied runners.
Each Way Betting Calculator Example
A £10 each way bet at 5/1 costs £20 in total.
If the horse wins, the win part pays at 5/1, and the place part also pays at the reduced place odds.
If the horse finishes second and the bookmaker pays three places, the win part loses, but the place part still pays.
That’s the useful bit with each way betting. You can still get a return even when your horse doesn’t win, as long as it finishes inside the paid places.
What the Each Way Calculator Does Not Include
This tool covers standard each way returns, Rule 4 deductions, and simple dead heat settlements.
It does not cover every possible bookmaker rule. Extra place offers, void bets, non-runner changes, best odds guaranteed, and race-specific terms can still affect the final payout.
Check the bet slip before placing the bet, especially in big handicaps where place terms can change quickly.
